1. How do I Run Uzzap on my phone?

  • To start the Uzzap application you must find it in your phone. Typically it can be found in “Applications”, however on some phones java applications are all stored in “Games”. Simply press the “U” button to start the application.

You may wish to select “Auto Start” from the Settings Button (see above) which will allow Uzzap to start automatically when the phone starts (only available on Symbian phones). You may also wish to set up a soft key on your phones front screen to give you easy access to Uzzap. For Nokia phones use the personalization options under settings to set Uzzap as a shortcut or an active standby application.

2. How do I set up my other messenger account/s?

Go to the IM (“Instant Messaging”) button on the Main Menu. Connect to your messenger account of choice and enter your current ID and Password, then select Login.

Once you’ve established a connection you will automatically be logged in to this IM network each time you enter the Messenger program.

3. What’s the difference between Instant Messaging and Extended Messaging?

We refer to messages with other Uzzap users as “EM” or “Extended Messaging” because of current and future enhanced features like e-SMS, e-Mail, GSM calls, etc. Messages sent to buddies on other IM networks are still called Instant Messaging.

4. How do I invite my friends?

In the Main Menu, select the “Invite Friends” or “Add or Invite Buddies” option. These options allow you to select contacts from your phone address book and send them an SMS invitation to download Uzzap client and join our community.

Note: This feature may not be available on some phones.

You can also send invitations by IM to buddies on your other messenger accounts. Just highlight their buddy name and select the option “Invite”.

5. What is Automatic Buddy Matching?

When you first register and log in, “Automatic Buddy Matching” will get started. This feature reads your phone address book and uploads the contacts to a server. The server then looks for matches with existing Uzzap users and shows you a list of possible new buddies. You then select from the list to add these matches to your buddy list. These people will just need to confirm that they are your friends and they get added as your Uzzap buddies. If the system can see that you and your both buddy know each other (you both know each other’s number) no approval process is required.
You can run the Buddy Matching anytime by selecting it from the Main menu.

6. How do I add more Uzzap Buddies?

If you know of an Uzzap user who is not yet your buddy, you can add her directly by going to “Add or Invite Buddy” button on the Main Menu. This will send an add request to your friend. However she will need to approve your request.

Check the section in the Buddy List called “Pending Buddies” to see which friends have not yet approved your buddy request.

7. How do I switch from UZZAP to my regular phone applications?

Sometimes you might want to switch take a call or check your text messages normally. On some phone models, you can switch from Messenger to regular phone functions without exiting by selecting the “Hide” command. This runs the Messenger in the background. If a new message comes in, Messenger will “wake up” from the background and display the message.

Another approach is to press and hold the menu button on a Symbian phone. This will show you a list of applications running in the phone – you can choose and switch to where you want to go.

Note: This feature may not be available on some phones.

8. I can’t find the program after I installed it! Where is it?

  • Different handsets place newly installed programs in different places. New Nokia phones usually insert these programs in the “My Own” or “Applications” folder by default. Just search for the program icon with the Uzzap logo, and that’s it.

One way to make the Uzzap icon easy to find on Nokia phones is to include as one of the Active Standby apps. This means you can find it right on the default screen.

On Nokia Series 60 phones, this is set by going into Settings / General / Personalization / Standby mode / Active Standby apps. Or Shortcuts

QUICK TIP! :Click the Uzzap icon and Log In.

You can also speed things along by setting the program to automatically log in your ID and password when you run the program.

You can also tell Uzzap to start whenever your phone starts by choosing Settings from the Uzzap main menu and then choosing Auto Start.

9. How to use The Buddy List?

  • The EM Buddy List is the starting point of Uzzap. This is usually divided into:

All Buddies – buddies that are currently available Most Frequent - the buddies you communicate with most often

Other Contacts – Contacts that are not registered in Uzzap. These contacts can be mobile numbers, landline numbers or even just email addresses and can include overseas contacts. Where these contacts are in the Smart network you can communicate with them using E-SMS.

Pending Buddies - to see which friends have not yet approved your buddy request or who have been identified by Auto Buddy Matching as people you may know and wish to invite.

10. How do I add Uzzap Buddies?

Okay, you’re inside the program and staring at the buddy list. You can beef it up by adding buddies manually through their user ID (assuming you know what it is). From the buddy list, select “Options” and choose “Add/Invite Buddy”, then click on “Add Buddy by User ID”. Your friend will need to approve your add request. The easiest way is to activate Auto Buddy Matching and let the system add your buddies for you.

11. What are “Other Contacts”?

  • There is another kind of buddy called an “Other Contacts”. You might have friends on low end phones who can’t run the Uzzap program. But as long as they can send/receive SMS, Email or GSM calls they can still be your Uzzap Buddy. You can send special ESMS from Uzzap to your Other Contacts using a Smart mobile when they reply, you will see their messages in Messenger.

Other contacts can be landline users, email users and even international contacts. This allows you to use the convenience of Uzzap to communicate with everyone you know! Most Frequent - the buddies you communicate with most often

Other Contacts – Contacts that are not registered in Uzzap. These contacts can be mobile numbers, landline numbers or even just email addresses and can include overseas contacts. Where these contacts are in the Smart network you can communicate with them using E-SMS.

To add Other Contacts, select “Options” while in the Uzzap Buddy List and select “Add/Invite Buddy”, then “Add Other Contact”. You can either do it “Manually” or “Add from Phonebook”. If its “Add Manually”, you have to enter the Nickname, Mobile Number and Email Address. They will now be listed in your buddy list.

12. What about IM Buddies?

If you selected an automatic login to your other messenger accounts (IM), your buddies on these IM networks should show up in the Buddy list. However, you can’t add new IM buddies from Uzzap. You need to add buddies to by logging in directly to your IM account to do that.

13. How do I send a message?

Just select the Buddy name from the Buddy list. Press the “fire key” or “joystick” (the middle button) on your phone. If this is a Uzzap buddy, you should see a long list of extended messaging options:

Communication to other messenger accounts is more limited:

This is limited only to Uzzap buddies – currently you can’t include Other Contacts or IM buddies to conferences.

15. What does View History do?

This shows a list of your chats – even those that took place days ago. All your chats are recorded until you decide to delete them. To delete your chat history, go back to the main EM Buddy List, select Options and select “Clear Message history”.

16. How do I create a Buddy Group?

TIPS AND TRICKS

Uzzap has many little features to make it the quickest, easiest and best way to communicate with you friends, family and workmates. Here are a few to get you started:

Note that some versions such as Java Lite do not have all features (although we try very hard to include as many as we can). Also if you find some of these tricks do not work, make sure you have the latest version of Uzzap (currently as of 18th August that is version 2.0).

1. From the Main menu, just start typing the name of the contact you want to send a message to or call – Uzzap will take you straight to that person in the buddy list.

2. From either the buddy list or a message tab, just press the green “call” button and Uzzap will start a normal phone call for you with that person.

3. You can connect to Uzzap from anywhere in the World and in many ways (so it’s a great way to keep in touch with friends or family):

- On a mobile client on the Smart network (probably the cheapest option since you don’t have to pay for any data charges)
- On a PC using the PC client (just download it from uzzap.com/download) – Free but you need to be connected to the internet.
- From a browser window – just go to www.uzzap.com then login using your userid and password. Make sure you allow pop-ups and the Uzzap widget will open up. You can access the chat rooms from here also. Free also, but you need to pay the Internet Café or ISP.
- On a mobile client on another mobile network (anywhere in the World!). Uzzap doesn’t use much data but it’s best to be on a flat rate data plan if you want to use this option.
- Using SMS (Smart network only) – send Help to 7272 to get started. All Smart Uzzap packages include unlimited messages sent using SMS.

4. Why use Uzzap on Smart? When you use Uzzap with Smart you pay to use it but you don’t have any extra data charges. Using Uzzap on another mobile network it’s best to make sure you are on flat rate data plan to avoid big bills – you are sure to find Uzzap works out cheaper on Smart than other networks.

5. Are there other advantages to using Uzzap on Smart? You bet there are! Uzzap incorporates a high level of SMS integration. This means that if a message can’t be delivered to you in Uzzap for any reason, Uzzap will automatically send it as SMS absolutely free. We call this Assured Message Delivery.

6. Still not convinced? Using Uzzap on Smart it’s free to login and free to receive messages. If you use Uzzap on other networks you need to pay for your data even if you are just logged in and not doing anything.

7. Uzzap mobile clients are currently available for many phone models, but if you are a big time user you should consider getting a Symbian phone. Symbian allows you to keep Uzzap running in the background all the time (we call it “Always On”) so you get the most from it. To swap from Uzzap to any other function or application running in the phone, press and hold the “menu” button and scroll to where you want to go.

8. From a message tab, just start typing your reply and Uzzap will automatically open the reply window and start forming your message. Just press the Fire Key (the joystick or toggle) to send. So that means you only have to press one extra key apart from your actual message to send a reply!

9. From anywhere in the buddy list, press left on the Fire Key to go to the top of the list.

10. Uzzap works well even on a 2G mobile data connection – and this will also give you the best battery life on your phone. Just switch to 3g or UMTS if you want to download a file or browse the internet. Many current phones allow you to switch between 2g and 3g without having to restart the phone.

11. When you buy an Uzzap package on Smart it now also gives you unlimited Uzzap SMS messages (to 7676). So if you get a message delivered as SMS while you are not in the client, you can just reply knowing it is included in your package.

12. Set up Groups with people you often need to communicate with together. Now you can send them a Group message. Recipients can use “Reply All” to cc everyone back. Great for businesses and teams of any kind.

13. Don’t use your Userid as your password. Many so called hackers look for this and steal accounts. Also avoid common passwords like 123456 or ILOVEYOU.

14. You can send unlimited text messages from Uzzap on Smart using the ESMS feature. First you need to buy an Uzzap Plus! (P20) package – just go to the “U” Subscription Menu to do this. Now using your mobile client look for the Phonebook group in your buddy list. Click to open it – then choose any contact on the Smart network. All your messages to Smart contacts are unlimited!

15. Check out the options in Settings to customize how Uzzap works for you. You may like to turn off Chat room Tones if you are in busy rooms, or Auto Message Display if you get annoyed with an incoming message interrupting something else you are doing on the phone.

16. If you are out with an Uzzap friend and forget your phone – or you are low-bat, you can log in to your Uzzap account on their phone! All charges will still go to your registered mobile number so if you have a package it will be valid for messages sent in this way. You could also set your status message before you finish so your friends will know why you are out of touch.
